How To Build A To-Do List That Actually Elevates You

We’ve all been there: sitting down with a fresh cup of coffee, opening a notebook, and writing down a list of tasks we’ve already half-completed. It feels good to see a list full of checkmarks by noon, but at the end of the day, do you actually feel closer to your big goals?
There is a massive difference between a Maintenance List and an Elevation List.
The Habit Trap
It is easy—and psychologically comforting—to list the things we do out of habit. Cleaning the desk, responding to routine pings, or attending standard meetings. These things keep your world spinning, but they don’t necessarily move it forward.
What Does Elevation Look Like?
To elevate, you have to include the actions you are prone to “forget.” You know the ones: the uncomfortable phone call, the deep-work session on that new project, the 30 minutes of skill-building, or the strategic planning you usually push to “next week.”
Make It Happen Today
Don’t wait for a “slower week” to start prioritizing growth. If it isn’t on the list, it won’t happen.
- Audit your list: Cross off the stuff you do on autopilot—those don’t need a slot.
- Add the “Forget-Me-Nots”: Write down the high-impact actions you’ve been avoiding.
- Commit to the hard stuff first: Tackle the elevation tasks while your energy is highest.
Your To-Do list should be a ladder, not a treadmill. Begin today.
I am cheering you on for a Winning List
