Discerning Presence vs. Support In Your Circle

We naturally want to believe that everyone standing beside us is standing for us. But realization has a way of quietly catching up. Not every person in your room is cheering for your growth. Some are just watching to see how far you’ll go, while others are only there for the seats you provided.
I used to measure my community by the numbers and presence. I counted the seats filled at dinner, the likes on a post, and the physical bodies in the room when I celebrated a win. Yes the dinners and celebration were invites. For a long time, I mistook quantity for quality, and presence for partnership.
We often avoid this conversation because it feels cynical. We don’t want to be the person questioning the motives of our friends, family, or colleagues. But the truth is, this realization doesn’t always come in a violent crash. For me, it was a slow, quiet dawn. It was the build-up of dozens of small moments where the support I felt didn’t match the presence I saw.
That is when the realization finally caught up with me: Everyone standing beside you is not standing for you.

The Power of Presence vs. The Purpose of Support
We MUST learn to discern the difference.
1. Simple Presence. People in your circle who are merely “present” are just along for the ride.
- They show up for the show: They love being there for the public peak moments.
- They occupy space: They take up your time, energy, and resources, but the flow is entirely one-way.
- They stay on the surface: Their relationship is built on comfort, convenience, or transactional gain.
2. True Support. People in your true “support circle” are there to anchor you.
- They support your structure: They help you rebuild when you are quiet, unseen, or struggling.
- They celebrate without envy: Your win doesn’t make them feel smaller; they feel invested in your success.
- They are constant: Their support is reliable, not conditional.
How to Discern Your True Circle

The point of this realization isn’t to build walls; it’s to build the right bridge. Discerning your true supporters is an act of self-preservation, a necessary form of stewardship over your own journey. You start to identify them by paying attention to the substance, not just the shadow. Ask yourself:
- Who refuels me, and who drains me?
- Who holds me accountable with love, and who competes with me in secret?
- Who is standing for me, even when there is absolutely nothing in it for them?
The Compass to Move Forward

It takes immense courage to look at your circle with clear eyes. Some people are only meant to stand beside you for a season. Honoring that reality allows you to set healthy boundaries without guilt. Most importantly, this realization frees up space to honor your true, consistent supporters. Thank them for being your constants. Lean into the deep connection.
This realization isn’t about bitterness. It’s about clarity. It’s about ensuring that as you climb, your anchor is set into solid rock, not sand.
