Why Is Respect So Hard?

It’s Not How You Were Raised It’s Who You Choose to Be

Take a walk down any crowded sidewalk, scroll through a comment section, or observe a room full of people discussing health, politics, or lifestyle choices. It doesn’t take long to spot a growing epidemic in our culture: a total breakdown of simple human respect.

When did we start treating differences of opinion as personal attacks?

When did it become standard practice to criticize anyone whose path looks different from ours?

We often excuse bad behavior by saying, “Well, that’s just how they were raised,” or “They didn’t grow up with good manners.” But blaming upbringing only takes us so far. At a certain point, adulthood arrives, and the mirror turns back on you. Respect is not a reflection of your past; it is a declaration of your present character.

The Real World Test: Manners in the Noise

In a world full of noise, basic courtesy has become a lost art. When was the last time you heard someone say a sincere “excuse me” without attitude? Or a genuine “thank you” when someone held space for them?

Even rarer is the humility required to say: “I misunderstood before I spoke. I’m sorry.”

Instead, modern culture encourages quick reactions, snap judgments, and defensive posturing. We speak before we listen. We criticize before we seek to understand.

The Comparison Trap (From the Gym to Daily Life)

Look at how this plays out in the wellness space. One person thrives lifting weights in a commercial gym. Another finds their fire streaming workouts in their living room (that’s me). A third prefers crafting their own hybrid routine.

Why is there a need to label one as superior and the other as wrong?

This tendency to criticize what isn’t “our way” stems from insecurity. When we feel the need to tear down someone else’s choice, it’s usually because we rely on external validation to feel good about our own.

Truth check: You don’t need everyone to walk your path to prove that your path has value.

Elevating the Standard

We don’t all need to think alike. We don’t all need to move alike. Diversity of perspective and lifestyle is what makes community strong, not weak.

Respecting someone doesn’t mean agreeing with everything they do or say. It simply means recognizing their right to exist, grow, and choose their path without receiving your unprovoked judgment.

Ask yourself today

  • Where am I letting projection or impatience cloud how I treat others?
  • Am I willing to own up when I speak too soon?
  • How can I raise my own standard of respect starting right now?

It begins with you, not yesterday, not in your childhood home, but right here in the choices you make today.
