Reflecting on my fitness journey and the struggles I had at the beginning and how many times I begin and stopped. Really the the number is, I don’t know but I can say it was greater than 20. Yes that many and why? It took me a long while to understand me and why I would stop. The BIGGEST reason and it was only one, the others were just excuses to satisfy myself.
The BIGGEST REASON, I was not accepting me for me for the now. I was not happy with myself, how I look and how I felt and just kept thinking I don’t like me. I was not accepting myself for where I was and the person I was at that time. When I begin to accept me just as I was and looking at myself loving me for me just as I was but willing to adjust you know begin tweaking me. Yes, accepting myself I was able to see what changes I wanted to do and those I could implement immediately, plans, writing it down, staying focus. I had to accept the current me to grow into the me I wanted to be.
But this applies to not just fitness journey, it applies to any journey. So today if you’re wanting change and keep stopping to start over again, I ask you to STOP the stopping. I want you to ACCEPT YOU just as you are right now, love you. Now the changes you want, the goals, write them down, and every day evaluate, tweak but continue to ACCEPT YOU and keep moving toward those goals.
Yes did you do it? A few days ago there was again a new national day I was introduced to, “Ditch Your Resolution”, really.
Well if you did, I’m encouraging you to reinstate them especially if it is for your health and you had a workout plan and nutrition plan that you feel was useless and not working, again Really.
You must to begin with Believe in yourself and also Have patience. There is no sudden miraculous change in the fitness and nutrition world, well surgery. Otherwise you have to plan for the journey. I know I once and sometimes wish for that miraculous change, but I also know it takes input on that wish.
Input the time in workouts. The gyms are always busy in the beginning of the year, if you can change your time. Find out from the staff the least busy times. If you cannot do that then you can join me workout at home with so many choices and trainers. Whatever you do don’t give up on you. Also don’t make huge challenges in your workout you know you are not prepared for. Start out gradual and then increase the intensity or minutes and your body will tell you when, just again don’t stop.
Nutrition change is a challenge for many so you are not alone but don’t go making drastic changes you know you will not adhere to. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment, notice disappointment not failure because you are not a failure. Slow changes again or hey I know of a few nutrition program that are lifestyle changes not temporary but for life and are simple to follow.
Okay with that all said how about reinstating those intentions again, you in? Say yes, nod your head yes, smile not DO IT back to that journey.
If you didn’t know I’m here to tell you, YOU ARE GREAT. Did you hear that or should I shout it again? Okay YOU ARE GREAT.
That is something I need to share because you are and it is good to hear it from someone else but okay to acknowledge it to yourself for you. I once thought and was raised to believe you allow others to tell you you’re good, great you should not do this yourself. This is such a a cow field and acres of yeah you know. Waiting on someone else to admit your greatness may take a life time, maybe not that long but years.
How does greatness within relate to a workout well it does and I will explain. There are so many people thinking working out will improve the person they are for the wrong reason. Workouts will improve your physical appearance and your mindset about your appearance, improve confidence and make you feel like you own it (it is whatever your journey in life is).
NOW, did you know your physical appearance is already great whether you need to lose 5, 10, 40 or 100 pounds. You just need to tweak it to get it to your desired healthy weight or size. However know if you are working out the size change may come before the weight change. The non-scale victory always show up first.
Tweak your workouts and nutrition will make a difference in your physique BUT I need to tell you THAT GREATNESS has always been there. Yes your mindset of positive, the confidence has been there you just had it locked in or only allowed it to flow slowly. SO yes tweaking is necessary. Just as we tweak our wordings when writing, talking, our clothes, hairstyles, makeup, shave don’t forget how GREAT you are.
Inner strength does not, well for me just me pushing myself to one more rep or lifting extra weight. Inner strength is being strong to walk away from negative people, saying NO instead of yes when I know the topic is not favorable or positive towards my goals or life or harming someone else.
Inner strength to let go of friends you know are toxic or unsupportive always about them. Am I ranting? No and yes. No because I have realized toxic people have slowed down a few of my life goals. Now is this their fault, NO. It’s mine because I allowed it. Unsupportive, I know we are all different in many ways and similar in many, but that support is two ways. Yes is supporting you all the times and you never support me hmmm. Yep I have to dig deep and move on. This really can hurt for a few days but that deep breathe of clean air and light weight yeah feels good. This takes great inner strength because LIFE is short and who wants to limit association with friends and family. No one, but if it means clarity and enjoying your life and making goals become a reality ….. you get it. This just take Inner strength. I am still a bit weak in some areas but my strength is growing and I feel better in eliminating.
This applies to and for me. PLEASE do not run about eliminating people from your life. Evaluate and not just on one incidence. Communicate, explain your concerns and feelings. It takes inner strength to do that also because it it’s so easy to shake it off and off and off.
I have been asked this question so many times in the past weeks. First I want to say I have nothing against going to the gym, it just does not work for me for several reasons and I will share.
1. By the time I get dress drive to the gym, check in place my clothes in the locker room- my stream workout is done.
2. If I’m tired in my commute from work or just had a long tiring day and need to unwind I’m not going to stop by the gym. However if I go home and relax I can workout at home.
3. I can be dress in any attire to workout on my stream
4. My fit community is so supportive and positive and even more motivating
5. I need structure. There is a calendar for me to follow and the trainers are just awesome also motivating, encouraging and just real.
6. My trainers are available 24/7 on stream and if necessary I can DM them on IG.
7. Last for now, IT’S MY CHOICE AND APPEASING TO ME.
Puzzling as it sounds, I had a third leg or so it felt like. I often reflect on his to remind myself of again my transition and gains on my fitness journey. I know I’ve shared this before and it is necessary for me to reflect on.
I have a history of horrible eating disorder. Yes I’ve been through it all, anorexia- which I could go for a month or longer on water or a Sonic Route 44 once a day. Bulemia if I consumed a meal greater than 500 calories or another bulemia is to workout until my burn has 3 to 4 times greater than my intake. Oh yes I occasionally abused laxatives. I was thin shapely an VERY VERY unhealthy.
On the flip of this I went through phases of just binging and binging and yes you guessed it, more binging. I was large and angry because the manufacturers were making their clothes smaller. I was not willing to accept the fact I was eat and had eaten out of smaller sizes. I yo-yo for a minute then the third leg reality came.
I had a third leg. I had gone from XS scrubs to XL and they were getting tight. I one day put on my scrubs, right leg, left leg and I literally had to raise my abdomen up and drop it in my scrubs. Now most people gain abdominal weight all around no mine just hung like a leg. I privately cried and did not want to use the bathroom at work because of how long it took to undress and redress after doing my business. I took a look and knew I needed to change and that’s when my fitness journey begin.
Do I fall off track sometimes but guess what? I don’t have a third leg and NO I’m not back in XS scrubs but I am in M and they are getting just a bit loose but nearly enough for a small.
I eat normally, my intake fluctuates as so my craving but thanks to “ultimate portion fix and the containers” also 2BMindset my nutrition is one of health. My workouts are all on point, streamed Beachbodyondemand.
So bye,bye third leg and on with my fitness journey. To you I send my best that you can wave bye to anything in your life you are not excited about and move forward to your goal or goals as they just keep coming.
That sounds weird as if I am a robot right? Well I’m no robot and troubleshoot is just what I’ve recently begin saying to myself. Why this term well I have to evaluate myself. Sometimes it’s my workouts and other times it’s life and the ball it tosses.
Workouts first. I sometimes hesitate maybe laziness, fatigue (which is different from lazy), stress, frustration and this list can go on but hopefully you get the picture. I have to evaluate my reason and why. The why can itself create a list. Now then it’s time to troubleshoot the why or whys. How?, well I must look at the reason for example if I am stressed about a situation. I look deeper to determine if it actually involves me (sometimes we get caught up on change or circumstances of others and it effects us). If it does involve me what can I do, or is it a situation of change I need to adjust to and move along. This usually applies to on the job. If it is personal then what do I need to implement to distress myself and immediately because stress can lead to a multitude of health issues. So there, I trouble shot.
I know some say resolved and it is but I feel I should go deeper and trouble shoot so I will not in a few weeks or month have to re-resolve. Just saying and it’s what works for me.
After resolution which sometimes take a few minutes, hours, days, a week or two and never prolonging into months. Using the example given in workouts once resolved I can give greater than 100 in my workouts and see results as well as feel better.
Life now. How do I troubleshoot that? Almost the same how am I affected and involved. Am I being a butthead and not wanting to adjust or is it a matter I need to handle? If it is the butthead I evaluate why am I being just that every reason I come up with I question it. If it an issue I need to handle personally then I implement a plan and follow through. Again resolved, resolution the same I just troubleshoot because I dig deeper in hopes of a zero return. It’s just me.
Either way I encourage you to evaluate the reason you sometimes delay your goals be it workouts or a life goal you are progressing in. TROUBLESHOOT IT.
There is so much going on in the fitness world, workouts, diets, and fasting. Intermittent fasting is getting a lot of chatter and so far I’m hearing good results. I was approached by a colleague and asked if I’d ever tried it. My face went blank and I stared before I answered because I could tell by her excitement she had tried it and was doing it regularly.
Why did I stare, well I hadn’t shared my fasting days, which were really my anorexia days. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be judged. Not that it matters on this subject but the negative conversation that come up I just wasn’t feeling it. I did however share with her the details why I can’t intermittent fast purposely.
Purposely yes, some days life just keep me busy before I realize it has been 18 hours darn near 24 sometimes that I have eaten. My blood sugar is low, my attitude is not very pleasant and I’m hangry. When this happens I make certain my first bite will be either a protein, for me usually peanut butter or a protein bar or a plate of veggies. I then follow up with a glass of water, wait a few minutes and I’m okay.
Intermittent fasting is not for me due to my volleying anorexia, bulimia, and overeating I just try to do it all my way. Yep eating 85/15 sometimes 75/25 (not often) and working out and hanging onto my fitness journey in a healthy way. My eating fluctuates because I do use portion containers – Portion fix with Autumn Calabrese is good in making sure your nutrition is not lacking so you can eat almost anything. Now 2BMindset another nutrition intake on Beachbodyondemand.com with Ilana Muhlstein. Eating what you normally eat at specific times and portion make a HUGE difference. Which is my favorite, uh neither. No favorite when they both are batting 100.
To prevent myself from slipping back into unhealthy eating habits I will not test myself because I know my relationship with myself. I do applaud all doing the intermittent fasting and with great results. Keep up the greatness within you and what works for you.
Working out for fitness and seeing the body’s response can be fast or slow. This is the tea- WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.
Knowing that we are different is to say there will be different responses. The worst thing is to compare your body’s response to another. I learned this and had to refocus on ME. I know that my metabolism is off due to my history of an eating disorder and it’s going to take a bit more of everything not just workouts but nutrition as well. With this known I know my response to any workout program is going to be slower. Am I upset well NO.
If you want CHANGE it is first to know yourself. Knowing yourself is to know your body. Cardio workouts may give you little response and weight lifting may display a huge change or vice versa. Proteins, carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats does not react the same in everyone. Again I say, know your body and if you don’t just move things around and figure it out or consult a nutrition, metabolism testing helps decide which food groups works best for you. But whatever you DON’T STOP” just because your results are not as fast as someone else or different body parts are responding slower.
Also don’t forget the non scale victory or should I say victories because there are so many. Just keep working out and know and believe change is happening and your goal awaits. To weeks of VICTORY for working out I’m saluting you with an extra lift.
Do you know the value of small changes? I am aware there are people that really want to make a physical change and begin their fitness journey but will not because of easy excuses:
1. I don’t have time or my time is limited – I know but just start anywhere, 5 minutes of a workout will begin a process and progress and outweighs NOTHING
2. My days are so limited – okay commit to the day or days you do have again JUST GET STARTED
3. I’m not sure if I can lift as much as others, run as long , squat as low and so on- uh huh its not about others, its about YOU. Yes you give your best, stop measuring your self to others.
Making the small changes, commit, 5 minutes, one day two days, lift 2 lbs, run 30 seconds squat as low as you can and with consistency all of this will change and those small changes will add up and not only that you will be so proud of yourself. How do I know, because this was once me.
